Description

The Dewar College of Education at Valdosta State University proudly maintains a commitment to providing an education for future professionals in rural South Georgia. This commitment began with the inception of Valdosta State as an institution of higher education in 1906. The Dewar College of Education draws its population primarily from the surrounding forty-one counties, which represent 34 percent of the total area of the state and contain 12 percent of the state's population. Acting as a learning community, the Dewar College of Education strives to meet the needs and aspirations of the population it serves.

Nearly 12,400 undergraduate and graduate students attend Valdosta State University from almost every county in Georgia, 48 states and 53 countries. The size of the student body enables the university to offer students a close relationship with their professors in classes with a student to professor ratio of 19 to 1.

Five colleges -- Arts, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education and Nursing -- as well as a graduate division offer 53 undergraduate majors, 11 master's degrees (23 majors), 10 education specialist majors and a doctorate in education with three majors. Nationally accredited programs include art, business, education, nursing, sports medicine and speech pathology.

Valdosta State University is an innovator in the use of technology to enhance instruction. The Langdale College of Business Administration offers a collaborative WebMBA program with four other Georgia universities. A web-based MPA program, in addition to an on-campus program, is offered by the College of Arts and Sciences. The university affords opportunities for distance learning at off-campus locations throughout its South Georgia region, including Kings Bay Naval Base on the east coast of Georgia, Moody Air Force Base in Lowndes County, and the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany. It is one of five schools in the university system to offer courses through Georgia G.L.O.B.E.

Students can participate in 145 recognized student organizations, offering a wide variety of programs and activities. The university also boasts a championship NCAA Division II athletic program. The "Blazers" compete in a total of nine men's and women's intercollegiate sports.

Founded in 1906, the institution was named the South Georgia State Normal College for young ladies in 1914. In 1922, a legislative act changed the name to Georgia State Woman's College and authorized a four-year program leading to the bachelor's degree. The Board of Regents made the College co-educational in 1950, changing the name to Valdosta State College. VSC became Valdosta State University in 1993.
