Description
The mission of the College of Education of the University of West Georgia is to provide excellence in the initial and advanced preparation of professionals for a variety of settings, to foster an innovative learning community, and to empower a faculty committed to teaching and the dissemination of knowledge. The College of Education is student-focused and recognized for excellence in the comprehensive preparation of effective professionals.
A coeducational, residential institution, the University of West Georgia (UWG) is a comprehensive regional university that enrolls over 10,000 students. UWG offers 115 programs of study through three colleges—the College of Arts and Sciences, the Richards College of Business, and the College of Education. Sixty programs are available at the bachelor’s level, 52 at the master’s and specialist levels, and three at the doctoral level. These programs enrolled 10,677 students in fall 2007.
Classes are offered on the 394-acre Carrollton campus and off-campus classes are available in Newnan at the university's Newnan Center; in Dalton through the External Degree Program, a collaboration between UWG and Dalton College; and at Floyd College in Rome through the Enhancing Access initiative.
In addition, the Honors College, the only college of its kind in Georgia, offers an Honors curriculum and the Advanced Academy of Georgia, one of fewer than 12 programs in the nation that allows gifted high school juniors and seniors to live and study full time at a university while completing high school graduation requirements in absentia.
The Graduate School has one of the highest percentages of students enrolled in graduate classes in the University System. Undergraduates have nationally acclaimed access to research opportunities, and instruction is enhanced by faculty member research that is supported by more than $2.2 million in grants.
Established in 1906 as the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School, the school became a junior college in 1933 and in 1957 expanded to a four-year institution. West Georgia added graduate programs in 1967 and became the State University of West Georgia in 1996.
