Gainesville State College

Description

Described as the fastest growing college in the University System of Georgia, Gainesville State Colleges serves over 9,000 students at two campuses located in Georgia’s Hall and Oconee counties. The Gainesville campus in Oakwood, conveniently located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and 45 miles north of Atlanta, serves nearly 5,000 students.

The Oconee campus in Watkinsville, located a few miles south of Athens, serves about 2,200 students. The service region for Gainesville State College has a population of approximately 200,000 people and is a center for banking, medical care, law, and industry.

To meet the educational, civic, and economic needs of the Northeast Georgia region, the College offers a wide array of two-year and certificate programs as well as a limited number of baccalaureate degrees. GSC offers over 70 associate degree programs in business, education, humanities, performing and visual arts, allied health, biological and physical sciences, engineering, mathematics, computer science, social sciences, and criminal justice. The Certificate programs include child development, environmental sciences, environmental studies, European union studies, geographic information science, paralegal studies, personal training, and theatre and entertainment technology.

Gainesville State College offers a Bachelor of Science in Applied Environmental Spatial Analysis, a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Care and Education (birth-age five), a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education (pre-kindergarten-grade five) with the English to Speakers of Other Languages Endorsement and Reading Endorsement, and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Technology Management.

The Gainesville State College Theatre Department partners with Brenau University in the Gainesville Theatre Alliance, a nationally acclaimed program, which provides outstanding drama education and quality theatre for the community. Additionally, career associate degrees are offered in cooperation with Lanier Technical College and North Georgia Technical College in health services, drafting, and electronics technology.

The Georgia Board of Regents awarded Gainesville State College with the “Best Practices” recognition for its co-curricular transcript program. The University System Transfer Feedback Report noted that the average student GPA prior to transferring was a 3.03 and after transferring it was a 3.06. This indicates that Gainesville State College students are well-prepared for academic success at advanced levels. It is also one of eight two-year institutions nationwide that was honored as at “Top Performer” by the Community College Survey of Student Engagement for student retention practices.
