Description
The College of Education at Georgia State University is known for its outstanding programs in education and related fields. All of these programs are NCATE accredited and Georgia Professional Standards Commission approved. Many of our programs also have received special recognition from their professional organizations and other accrediting agencies.
The College has comprehensive programs in all areas of teacher education as well as in counseling and sports related fields. Most programs offer degrees at all levels and lead toward certification and licensure.
As one of the Southeast's largest instructional centers for teachers, administrators and counselors, Georgia State University 's College of Education has developed a reputation for producing outstanding graduates. Many graduates have been named teacher, counselor and administrator of the year throughout Georgia , other states and nationally.
The mission of the College of Education is to provide leadership and scholarship for the betterment of education and human development. The College of Education faculty views its diverse professional preparation programs with pride. Within the college there is a complementary focus on the preparation of high quality educators and human development professionals. Each professional preparation program is noted for strength of content and desirability of graduates by a wide range of universities, accrediting agencies, licensing authorities, school districts, and private sector agencies.
The college is divided into six departments: Counseling and Psychological Services, Early Childhood Education, Educational Policy Studies, Educational Psychology and Special Education, Kinesiology and Health and Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology.
Founded in 1913 in Atlanta, Georgia State University is the second-largest and one of the leading research institutions in the University System of Georgia. The University serves one-fourth of the graduate students in the university system; it is within a one-hour commute of more than one-third of the state's population.
More than 30,000 students attend Georgia State University annually. While 90 percent of the students are from Georgia, students also come from 46 states and 127 countries. More than 1,400 international students attend Georgia State and graduate students comprise 31 percent of the student population.
