Do I Have What it Takes to be a Teacher?

Becoming a teacher is an exciting and rewarding experience, but that doesn't mean it's easy. Before you decide to pursue a career in education, be sure to seriously consider whether it's truly right for you.

Rule Number One: Know Thyself. Choosing to pursue a career in education is a major decision, and no major decision should be made without some careful introspection. After all, it's important to know that you're making your choice based on the right reasons, and considering that your decision to be a teacher will impact the lives of your future students, you owe it to everyone to make sure your priorities are straight. To help shed some light on your true motivations, here are some good questions to ask yourself:

  • When you consider who has influenced you most, do any teachers make the list?
  • When you think of the people you most admire, are any of them teachers?
  • Do you love children? Are you interested in working with young people on a daily basis?
  • Is teaching your ideal profession or simply something you intend to fall back on if other careers fall through?
  • Is being passionate about what you do for a living more important than making money?
  • Have you enjoyed the time you've spent in school thus far?

While teaching can be exciting, it can also be frustrating at times, and in order to be a successful educator, you will need to have the passion, commitment and drive to get through the rough patches. Questions such as these are a great way to begin assessing whether or not teaching is the right path for you.
